Our Story

History of retreats

Quest for Treasure is a continuation of a fatherhood initiative started in 1984 by Brian Cheyne (picture above). The retreats cater for pre-adolescents and their dads and separate weekends are run for Lads&Dads and Dads&Daughters.
The weekends run from a Friday evening to Sunday lunch time and give Dads the opportunity to bless, build closer relationships, learn from other dads about fatherhood and share outdoor adventures with their child. The children get to know their dads better and also learn what puberty is all about.
After reading books like Raising a Modern Day Knight by Robert Lewis and Wild at Heart by John Eldridge (pictured below) I wanted an adventure to live and a fight to fight that will compliment fatherhood. I got involved with a prison ministry and found that many of the inmates made wrong decisions due to absent or abusive fathers. I wanted to create a something practical and simple yet strategic and meaningful for fathers to become better dads. In 2009 I linked up with Brian Cheyne who mentored me and since 2012 my wife Karen and I (pictured below), with the help of professional facilitators (pictured below), have been running the weekends ever since.
We believe dads have a big role to play in raising children. These weekends are aimed at helping fathers understand their role better. And since the dad shares stories of himself the children also understand him better. We want to help develop trusting relationships between dad and child which will set a platform for healthy and open communication during the teenage years. We believe that these weekends create memories that cannot be destroyed by moth or rust.
I have been married since 1996, and we live in Randburg. I’m a biker, book-lover, believer who likes analyzing stuff.
I am keen to partner with you to offer similar weekends. Quest for Treasure currently partners with YFC in Port Elizabeth, L’Abri (near Mooiriver KZN) and YFC Magaliesburg in Gauteng. I am also available to speak at your function (breakfast, parent information evening, retreat or conference)
